The recession that started last year has not let up, and it has changed what moves the needle in email marketing this year. Here are ten strategies that reflect where the channel stands right now, not where it stood a couple of years ago.

1. Run a real win-back campaign before you write anyone off. Job losses, closed businesses and general belt-tightening have made subscriber lists decay faster than usual this year. Before pruning inactive addresses, send a genuine win-back offer, since a subscriber who went quiet during a hard year may still be worth recovering.

2. Add social sharing links to your templates. A growing number of subscribers are active on social networking sites now, and a simple “share this” link inside a campaign costs nothing to add and occasionally extends a message’s reach well past your own list.

3. Lean harder into triggered mail. Welcome sequences and cart-abandonment reminders were nice-to-haves a couple of years ago. In a year when every campaign has to earn its keep, the automated, behavior-triggered messages are consistently outperforming batch sends, and deserve a bigger share of your attention.

4. Cut send frequency before you cut list size. If engagement is dropping, the instinct is often to prune the list. Try reducing how often you send first. A recession-weary inbox has less patience for frequent mail, and a lighter cadence sent to the same list can lift engagement without losing subscribers.

5. Emphasize value over promotion. Discount-only messaging is everywhere right now as businesses compete for shrinking wallets. Content that helps the subscriber, tips, guidance, useful information tied to your product, stands out against a flood of “sale” subject lines.

6. Double-check your templates render on mobile devices. More subscribers are checking mail on a phone than in past years, and a layout that only works on a desktop screen is increasingly leaving engagement on the table.

7. Keep testing subject lines, but test for the times. Language that felt appropriately upbeat two years ago can land wrong during a downturn. Testing variants against your actual audience, rather than assuming what worked before still works now, matters more in a year when tone is harder to get right.

8. Watch complaint rates like a hawk. Financial stress makes people quicker to hit the spam button on anything that feels like clutter. A rising complaint rate is an early warning sign worth acting on before it damages deliverability broadly.

9. Reconsider your sending frequency for B2B lists. Business subscribers are dealing with the same budget pressure internally, and inboxes are getting triaged more ruthlessly. A tighter, more relevant cadence tends to hold attention better than a high-volume one this year.

10. Tie every campaign back to retention, not just acquisition. New customer acquisition is harder and more expensive in a downturn. Email marketing’s real strength this year is keeping the customers you already have engaged and buying again, and campaigns built around that goal are outperforming ones aimed purely at growth.

The through-line across all ten is the same: relevance and restraint matter more in a hard year than volume ever did.
