The State of TikTok Marketing in 2022
TikTok crossed a billion monthly users heading into 2022 and launched TikTok Shop, forcing brands to decide whether it was an experiment or a core channel.
TikTok entered 2022 having just crossed one billion monthly active users, a milestone the app announced in September 2021, and having spent the prior year as the most downloaded app in the world. For marketers who had spent 2020 and 2021 treating it as a side experiment for reaching teenagers, the numbers made that position harder to defend heading into the new year.
Why budgets started moving
Two things made TikTok specifically attractive to advertisers in early 2022, beyond raw user numbers. First, its cost per impression was still noticeably lower than Instagram or Facebook, a gap that reflected how much less competition there was for ad inventory relative to demand. Second, Apple’s App Tracking Transparency changes from April 2021 had made Meta’s targeting and measurement less reliable, pushing marketers to look elsewhere just as TikTok was scaling up its own ad tools, including Spark Ads, which let brands boost existing organic posts rather than build separate ad creative from scratch.
The algorithm was the real story
What set TikTok apart wasn’t the ad platform, it was the discovery mechanism underneath it. The For You feed ranked content on engagement rather than a creator’s follower count, which meant a brand or a completely unknown small business could reach a large audience with one good video and no existing following. That was a real structural difference from Instagram and Facebook, where organic reach for business accounts had been declining for years and mostly favored accounts that already had scale.
This is also where “TikTok made me buy it” became a genuine commerce phenomenon rather than a marketing slogan. Products across categories, from skincare to books, saw measurable sales spikes tied directly to organic TikTok videos, sometimes from creators with no formal brand relationship at all. BookTok in particular pushed backlist titles back onto bestseller lists purely through unpaid enthusiasm.
What TikTok Shop signaled
Through 2022, TikTok began testing in-app shopping more seriously, rolling TikTok Shop out first in Indonesia and then the UK by August. It was an early, imperfect version of letting users buy without leaving the app, but the direction was unmistakable: TikTok wanted to own the entire path from discovery to purchase, not just the discovery half.
Who this suited
TikTok marketing worked best in 2022 for brands that could produce a steady stream of native-feeling video, not repurposed ad creative, and that had products visual or demonstrable enough to work in a fifteen to sixty second clip. Beauty, fashion, food and consumer gadgets thrived. Complex B2B offerings and businesses without the capacity to film regularly struggled to get traction, no matter how much they spent on ads.
The honest state of things
By the start of 2022, TikTok had moved past the question of whether it mattered. The open question for most businesses wasn’t whether to be there, it was whether they had the content muscle to compete for attention on a platform that rewarded a completely different kind of creative than the polished ads that had worked everywhere else.
